Sussing out the Soul of Rock and Roll in Los Angeles

This is a 25 minute video of Justin Vernon and Bon Iver’s drummer Sean Carey doing stripped down versions of a few tracks from Bon Iver (plus a cover of Bonnie Raitt’s ‘I Can’t Make You Love Me’ ((which is a lethally fucking sad song)) and ‘Babys’ from the Blood Bank EP. It was recorded in London, in October, 2011.

I like: Vernon’s tattoos, (but what do they mean, I want to ask him), his pink hoodie and the moment at 6:16 when his voice cracks during ‘Wash.’ and he proceeds to let loose on his vocals with a kind of deep, masculine wailing. Obviously I’m a fan of the falsetto, but this is singing. This is letting go and just feeling it, which is something I’m also trying to do more of, these days.
