This is interesting and we haven’t even talked about it yet even though this press release showed up in my inbox two weeks ago. (To be fair, in the meantime I went to Texas and ate tacos and danced and went to rock shows for ten days straight). The lineup for this Desert Daze festival is fully righteous, especially if you like sun-drenched psych rock, which I absolutely 100% do. Tinariwen is one of Mali’s finest musical exports, and Fool’s Gold, Warpaint and the Entrance Band are three of L.A.’s most consistently solid. (Especially the Entrance Band. They melted my face off at the Troubadour one night a few years back).
Speaking of face melting, you might notice that this Moon Block Party is happening in the desert out near Mecca, CA, which is just a few miles down the road from Indio,CA where Coachella will be happening on the same day as this groovy little fest. I don’t know whose idea this hyperlocal double booking was (BUT I WILL FIND OUT ((shakes fist at sky)) but I do know that the one day fest (presented by the public radio station KCRW and not, you know, the corporate behemoth Goldenvoice), is a tidy alternative to (or perhaps a mini-excurison from) the human swarm of teenagers, industry folk, rock stars and well-dressed scene chicks that will be assembled at the Empire Polo Field just down the road. Oh and tickets are $35.
